BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (15-amino-acid sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) corresponding to a partial sequence reported in the literature as derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. In the published scientific literature it has been characterized as a cytoprotective compound and has been the subject of extensive preclinical investigation.
The compound has been studied predominantly in in vitro and animal (preclinical) models. Reports in the literature have examined signaling associated with angiogenesis, including the VEGFR2 pathway and nitric-oxide (eNOS) signaling. A 2025 systematic review of the published record identified several hundred articles spanning 1993–2024 across PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase, the large majority of which describe non-clinical work.
Regarding human-stage research conducted by third parties, a Phase I safety and pharmacokinetic study of an orally administered formulation was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT02637284 and listed as completed in 2015. As reported in independent coverage and regulatory statements, BPC-157 has not been approved by the FDA or any other regulatory authority, and published human clinical data remain very limited.
