MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP), a class of short peptides encoded within a small open reading frame of the mitochondrial genome. As reported in the published literature, the molecule is a 16-amino-acid peptide that has been characterized as a signaling factor implicated in cellular metabolic regulation and mitochondrial-to-nuclear communication.
